Passing the Torch Mentoring Practitioners Share Core Coordination
Thank you to Leslie, Iris, Tamm y and Mandie, who are in my current Passing the Torch Mentoring Program, for the beautiful orchestration of how our embodied distinction of “core coordination” feeds their biointelligent wisdom!

As Leslie and Mandie are demonstrating in their embodied version of the Pilates ROLL DOWN with the Arm Springs on the Cadillac:

Leslie…”when I over-think and stabilize my shoulders, rather than “sense weight” through my hands being “held by the spring support”, it creates a lot of restriction in my body and hardening in places I need to soften for whole body movement. This setup allows me to feel how “effortless effort” moves my spine with grounding and spatial support.

Mandie…”I’m learning in this program, how to see the difference between directional cueing that brings me into a deeper relationship with the person I am assisting…and fixing someone, which creates a separation of client/expert.

Wendy….”thanks, Mandie and Leslie, yes, we are not working on “a body”, which creates tension in a person who thinks they need to be perfect…rather, we are guiding clients to “sense” their biointelligent wisdom, and how they can help themselves, so that releasing into gravity’s support wakes up internal lift naturally! This is a distinction that Ida Rolf, the creator of Rolfing/Structural Integration bodywork called “Spatial Medicine”!

Tammy…”speaking of creating space in your body, I have lived for years with sciatica and being very guarded in my lumbar spine. When Wendy first worked with me, I was very nervous about flexion, but I trusted her and we explored some amazing movements that have taken me out of pain, and into a new relationship with my sacrum: (we’ll show some photos that can demonstrate the setup we used)

“Using the support of the Stretch-eze Band in the ROLLING LIKE A BALL position, and from the Down the Back, Up the Front support with gravity and space……I could feel the band providing new space in my sacrum…my sacrum could BREATHE…and I could roll back with no pain! It was amazing!

“That success with rolling back, encouraged me to try the ROLLOVER, with the Stretch-eze band again, and a small 1/2 BARREL. This SETUP gave my feet something to connect with and it also gave my leg bones something to be heavy into. They often feel tight in my hips, so my sacrum does all the work. In this SET UP, they relaxed and my sacrum felt so organically able to float up, while softening and widening my ribs and chest….it was just so beautiful! I have a whole new conversation happening with my body!”

Creating SPACE is our bodies is a major conversation we address, and Iris shared what has opened up for her using the Stretch-eze Band:

Iris….”yes, I love this important new prop which gives me so much space in my body. I love STANDING IN THE BAND, feeling my feet grounded, and pressing gently with my arms into the sides of the band. This allows my back to widen with breath and I could do a ROLL DOWN from the standing position with much more space in my body!”

When we fight gravity, or attempt to do an exercise perfectly, by over-stabilizing, we create tension. By allowing gravity to support us, or “yielding” into gravity’s support, we awaken our natural uplift, which is gravity’s partner..Ground Reaction Force. We call this relationship …Down the Back, and Up the Front, which creates a spatial , biotensegrity relationship between every cell in our bodies!

Passing the Torch Mentoring Program Teachers Sharing their Breakthroughs

Passing the Torch Mentoring Program Teachers Sharing their Breakthroughs

Thank you to Passing the Torch Mentoring Program teachers, Clara Gelatt, Julie Long and Stefannie DeLa Mora for sharing what is opening for you in this second weeklong intensive of your yearlong PTT program in Austin. Marilyn Katz is also in the program but was unable to be with us at this time.

I am so inspired by these teachers, and their willingness to let go of their “knowing” mind… allowing the gift of curiosity and exploration to be present. What is occurring in our work together, as they are expressing, is a profound appreciation of their innate biointelligence, and how that awakening of their “Inner Teacher” shifts the focus from “teacher as expert” to “client as expert in their own experience”.

Fulfilling Our True Potential through our Brilliant Biointelligence…Passing the Torch Mentoring Graduates

Fulfilling Our True Potential through our Brilliant Biointelligence…Passing the Torch Mentoring Graduates

How do "discovery" and " curiosity" lead to Transformation… and cultivating our own voice?

Each of these fabulous teachers who are Graduates of my Passing the Torch Mentoring Program share their journey: Inez Fontoura, Nanci Patch, Susan Burke, Melody Benton-Thompson, Taeko Boyle, Emily Mokwunye, and Linda Swain.

Some of the insights and awarenesses shared:

  • Every time I work with Wendy, I discover something about myself that I didn't know was there…it's like taking off blinders
  • My whole life has transformed…I found my inner teacher, after many years of studying so many disciplines, I see how they are all related, in the body's intelligence
  • I found an invitation to my inner athlete, which I didn't even know was there – it's always so freeing
  • The concept of biointelligence was so new to me…each time I come to PCA to study with Wendy, or she comes to Tokyo, I get a clearer vision of my life's work….which is so different than just studying more exercises or doing more workshops
  • I'm competitive … I have discovered how much I was fighting myself in the Rollup and Rollover. As Wendy helped me to approach the movements with new awarenesses, I saw how my Upper Core support and breath could help me go deeper, and gain success.
  • I love the community that we are building around this body of work. Coming back to this safe environment to explore…to be open and vulnerable, is a gift.
  • I keep finding myself more and more…I've found a voice I've been looking for… for a long time, which allows me to help clients find their voices and help themselves…as I evolve, so do they.
  • There is a wellspring of knowledge here at PCA…as I come back to tap into it, I have found my courage to speak my words and vision
  • Just moving and working out is easy for me in Pilates, but I was having a hard time slowing down and sensing a deeper understanding of "Up the Front" so I could help others. Being here, and "Going Deeper" this week, especially on the Yoga Wall really ignited "Up the Front" in my body in deeper layers – and then in the Matwork Flow we did, I slowed down to sense more and it was very powerful.
  • Taking the profound awarenesses we built in our Matwork Flow to the next session where we did our partner teaching of matwork was exactly what I needed for my Personal development in my own body….and Professional development to go home and help others on a new level and with new ways of seeing and touching.
  • I love movement…and I love the authenticity of what we are studying…going deeper in how the body senses itself .

PLAYING TOGETHER! We are sensing NEW awarenesses and insights around our deep biointelligence and our interconnectedness. What we are discovering is that "the cell as a bag", as it is depicted in most anatomy books is obsolete. As we now know, through fascial studies, the cell is an open system…connected to every other cell, within our bodies and to the universe. We all know that everything is connected to everything else…so how can we begin to shift our language of "biomechanics-body as machine"…to "biointelligence-body as a living process" …the way the body senses itself, in relationship with the gravitational field. As Buckminster Fuller so beautifully stated:

"You never change by fighting the existing reality…to change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete"

Passing the Torch Mentoring Program Graduates "Going Deeper"

What is Now Present following OUR Year-Long Passing the Torch Mentoring Program

Passing the Torch Mentoring Program Graduates "Going Deeper"

It is such an honor to continue "Going Deeper" in mentoring these fabulous teachers who are graduates of my Passing the Torch Mentoring Program: Amanda Vernor, Kim Birdwell, Pat Hudson, Sybil Shearburn, Stephanie Patterson, Tina Hicks, Jenny Vick and Deborah Malone.

What I am present to in mentoring teachers is how we are "remembering the brilliance of who we are"…by getting in touch with the depth of our body's wisdom….our innate biointelligence. With this approach to movement, the simplest shift creates a fluid ripple effect that resonates throughout the entire body…the Teacher/Practitioner becomes a "guide" who is collaborating with the client in their healing journey.

Some of the distinctions the mentoring teachers are studying, and gaining a deeper awareness of:

  • We are engaged in a vital conversation of learning how to speak the language of our deep biointelligence….the language of our body. This is a language that is about "noticing what is working and building on that" " or noticing what is missing and discovering what is needed"…this is very different from the "right/wrong " approach to teaching movement.
  • We're learning how to speak a more universal language of the body around movement…a language that works across a wide range of people and movement methods, because it addresses what already exists in the body as a deep intelligence.
  • Biointelligence makes Pilates more accessible…by partnering with gravity, we learn to "sense" our bodies, so it empowers clients to be the expert in their own body..taking pressure off the teacher to be the expert.
  • This more "embodied" way of being with ourselves and our teaching is continually inspiring…there is no plateauing or being bored, because you are constantly learning from an internal wellspring of creativity.
  • By coming into awareness and empowering our biointelligence, we move beyond exercise and become energized…our practice moves from the studio into life!

We are so grateful to the teachers that we have studied with who have come before us in Pilates, yoga, and many other disciplines, who have shared their passion, purpose and vitality in ways that we can build upon.

And I am personally grateful for the mentoring teachers who are working with me over the years to help spread the breadcrumbs of the wisdom of an embodied approach to movement...especially since it is an essential way to shift the hypervigilance in the nervous system that so many people are caught in and don't know how to impact. By slowing down, and developing awareness, we learn the body's language…and, when we learn to listen to the deep wisdom of our body, it will guide us!

For teachers who are interested in learning more about my 2016 Passing the Torch Mentoring Program, please be in touch as registration is beginning now and it fills quickly. The year-long program is limited to 6 teachers and begins with a 2 hour group conference call in mid February 2016 to set up the context of the program...we will then meet in Austin for 3 week-long intensives: June 20-24, October 19-23 and February 20-24, 2017.

What is Now Present following OUR Year-Long Passing the Torch Mentoring Program

What is Now Present following OUR Year-Long Passing the Torch Mentoring Program

It has been such a gift to mentor these inspiring, dedicated Pilates teachers: Susan Burke, Emily Mokwunye, Melody Benton-Thompson, Diana Martin and Yuki Yoshii in their visions as movement educators. And that's what inspired our "Ab Gripper" song together!

You can see and hear from their authentic sharing that each of them brought a high level of intention, commitment and willingness to be coached to go to challenging places in their personal and professional lives…and to now have that new growth create a more mindful, personalized way of being with themselves and clients. We're very clear that Joseph Pilates' vision is a potent one, and yet there is so much that we did not know about how the body works, in Joseph Pilates lifetime. Bringing new distinctions to our Pilates career, from the somatic and scientific worlds, creates greater opportunities to be guided by the body's deep intelligence in our movement awareness and teaching.

This is the 5th year I will be mentoring a new group of teachers, and am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Passing the Torch Mentoring Program created by Lolita San Miguel and Balanced Body. The teachers within each of the programs I have led have inspired me to fully bring forth the multi-faceted vision that moves me, and to share that in a way that they are moved to create or empower a vision that moves them. Having studied with 5 of the Pilates Elders who studied directly with Joseph Pilates, my experience shows that empowering each person to be fully alive and living with passion, purpose and vitality is the true vision of Pilates, and am honored to have a career that is consistent with a philosophy that moves me deeply – one of being a global citizen in a complex world.

Wendy Speaks About Hamstrings As Intrinsic Muscles for Postural Patterning

Wendy Speaks About Hamstrings As Intrinsic Muscles for Postural Patterning

A distinction of our body of work at Pilates Center of Austin is grounded in "partnering with gravity" . When we allow the two directions of the spine to "ground the tail toward the feet – Down the Back", this action awakens inner ear support "Up the Front" for whole body core coordination from foot to head to hand.

These 3 teachers, Emily Mokwunye, Yuki Yoshi and Susan Burke, are all in my 2014 year-long Passing the Torch Mentoring Program. Each of them is exploring a different movement, Emily in one leg balance on Yoga Wall, Susan in Leg Circles, standing foot at wall, Yuki standing on Foam Roller, hands on wall…….yet they are all sensing the same action of the "Hamstrings as Tonic Muscle support for Postural Patterning". We are studying human movement patterning, and how that is a common language for all exercise techniques…the body doesn't care what we call the movement….what it wants is movement with awareness.

The Hamstrings are not just flexors…they are intrinsically connected with the tonic muscles of the spine. When we soften the knee, and allow our feet to open, in bending the leg….we connect the Hamstrings with the front of the spine, along with their ability to lengthen in 2 directions as the leg straightens……. toward the feet (relationship with standing), and up the front of the spine (inner ear lift).

This "back of the leg" relationship with the "front of the spine" is functional human movement patterning. By gaining an awareness of this vital relationship, you will transform your practice of Pilates, yoga and any other movement discipline, finding "effort with ease" .

Please read this excellent article "Tonic Function" by my mentor, Hubert Godard, Advanced Structural Integration Practitioner/Scientist/Researcher/Movement Educator, which gives greater clarity to this and other distinctions regarding the importance of "partnering with gravity".
