Our Pilates Post-Rehab/Injury Recovery Program
If you are recovering from injury or surgery, or have experienced chronic joint, back or muscle pain, our Pilates Injury Recovery & Prevention Program provides a very effective way to ease into a fitness program, without overstressing your muscles or joints. Moreover, in working with our highly skilled teachers, you will discover a newfound resilience and ability to prevent injury, as you move back into an active life.
This, after all, is what we all want—to be able to do the things we love all through our life, well on into our senior years. And, YES, no matter what your age, you can regain structural integrity in your body that will keep you injury and pain-free, enabling you to fully re-engage in your life—whether that be excelling at that sport you love or playing actively with your grandchildren.
Physical Therapists and Orthopedic Specialists are now recognizing Pilates as one of the most successful methods to treat many injuries, spinal disorders and joint diseases. Moreover, Pilates is not limited to just orthopedics, spine health and relieving back pain; it also benefits individuals with neurological problems (MS), chronic pain (fibromyalgia), women's health needs (menopause, osteoporosis, pre/post natal), performance enhancement needs (athletes), arthritic impairments (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis) and other movement dysfunctions.
After an injury, the brain starts to adapt to faulty movement patterns and faulty muscle recruitment, resulting in higher risk of re-injury or pain in other areas of the body. Even after the injury has healed and there is no pain, the compensation patterns may still stay. This is why it's essential that we address the whole body, and not only the injured area.
Let's take a closer look. One of the primary things that distinguishes Pilates from other exercise programs is its focus on the body as a synergistic whole, rather than concentrating on isolated muscles or regions. Through our program of gentle, precise, controlled movements and exercises, you will enhance your balance. What's more, you will become more aware than you have ever been of your body's movement patterns—why it feels the way it does— and how to relieve your pain without drugs or surgery. You may well know, for instance, that hunching over a computer hurts your back, but you may not know that it's because of the way your shoulders, head and neck are misaligned while working. This knowledge is real power because, with proper guidance, you can now clearly see, by applying Pilates principles to your daily activities, how you can make a dramatic impact in alleviating and preventing injury and pain
This brings up a crucial point that distinguishes our work at the Pilates Center of Austin. While we certainly teach you exercises that will prove invaluable, our focus is on much more than just a tableau of exercise routines. We are most interested in having you understand, on a deep kinesthetic level, the underlying principles of Pilates, so that you can take this awareness into your life and throughout your day-to-day activities. There's the real power—far more than simply knowing a series of exercises!
And finally, we bring a full complement of resources to bear on your special needs. In addition to our Pilates Integrated Wellness Services, we coordinate your recovery program with your primary health care provider and collaborate with our colleagues—neurologists, osteopaths, physical therapists, acupuncturists—to create a synergistic and holistic approach to your special needs. Please note, if you are suffering from an acute injury or condition, you will need to have a referral from your doctor, physical therapist (or other medical professional).
In addition to instruction in Post Rehab, we offer specialized programs in:
General Fitness, Weight Loss, Sports Performance, Pre & Postpartum Pregnancy Programs, SeniorFit™, Workplace, Structural Integration (Rolfing), and Therapeutic Breathwork (Buteyko Method Asthma Relief).
